Lancaster Welcomes Canadian-Chinese Artist Ed Pien

Ed Pien is an Canadian based Chinese artist who has exhibited across the world. His work will be in Lancaster for Lancaster Chinese New Year Festival.

His work ‘Memento’ explores the issue of migrant workers in an incredible walkthrough installation art piece that will be based in the Storey Gallery hall throughout the Festival starting on the 5th February.

The work was commissioned by the Chinse Arts Centre as part of its residency program and brought to Lancaster by the Hua Xian Chinese Society and the Storey Gallery.

Live at LICA Join The Festival!

We are pleased to announce that Live at LICA, Lancaster University will be presenting two music concerts as part of the Festival’s programme!

The first will be a performance by the Grand Union Orchestra called Bengal Tiger, Shanghai Dragon which fuses traditional classical themes and contemporary music styles from India, Bangladesh and China.

An internationally acclaimed classical guitarist – Xuefei Yang – inspired by the fact Madrid and Beijing share the same latitude performs a selection of her own arrangements of pieces including: J.S. Bach’s Violin Sonata No.2 in A minor and He & Chen’s Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto.

The Hua Xian Chinese Society presents an Evening of Cantonese Opera

The Hua Xian Chinese Society in partnership with Dukes Theatre will be bringing the beautiful tradition of Cantonese Opera – a form of classical Chinese performing arts – to Lancaster.

Performed by the Manchester Cantonese Operatics Society, they will perform a repertoire of five plays, each with powerful vocals, dramatic narrative and exquisite costume design accompanied by a traditional Chinese ensemble performing live music.

Looking back to 2010′s Celebrations…

Over 1,200 throughout the day joined us to enjoy a variety of music, dance and performances such as the Lion Dance, martial arts displays, Chinese orchestra and modern Chinese pop music and fun activities for the whole family. Visitors also enjoyed the smells and tastes of East Asia at the hawkers style food area with Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian and Thai food on offer.

2010′s celebrations have been the biggest so far over the past five years the event has been in Lancaster. So for those who missed out, heres some photos!
